Weekend Ceramics Course

Saturday + Sunday 9 + 10 January, 10:00–15:00
Glazing session a few weeks later on Sunday 31 January, 10:00–12:30

Teacher: Filip Arvas

The weekend course is a great start if you want to try the different ceramic techniques such as wheel throwing, pinching, coiling and slab building – or if you already have some experience and want to choose one step or technique to focus on. During the weekend you decide for yourself whether you want to focus more on throwing or on sculpting clay by hand. Everyone has their own pottery wheel throughout the course.

Outline: roughly as follows, but it varies a little from course to course depending on what the participants are interested in.

Day 1 – Introduction to ceramics and its terminology. The teacher goes through wheel-throwing techniques and centring on the wheel, and shows how to throw, for example, a cup or a bowl. Then participants try it themselves with guidance from the teacher. Anyone who prefers can also try sculpting in clay.

Day 2 – Now that everyone’s thrown pieces have become leather-hard, the teacher shows how to finish them on the wheel, for example trimming a foot ring and smoothing your work, as well as how to decorate, attach handles and sign your pieces.
You can try colour slips or underglazes if you want to paint your pieces before they go into the first firing.
On day 2, everyone also gets to try the hand-building techniques of coiling, slab building and pinching, and learn more about building and sculpting in clay.

Complete beginners are very welcome, as are those with some experience who want to develop further.

The course fee includes 3 kg of clay; after that you can buy more clay for SEK 70 per kg. All our glazes and colour slips are included, and we fire what you make, so once the course is finished you can take your ceramics home.

There is a lunch break – bring your own packed lunch to heat in the microwave, or buy something from one of the many restaurants in the area. Coffee and tea are on us.

After the weekend course, everyone’s pieces need to dry and then be bisque fired before they can be glazed. That is why the glazing session is a few weeks later.
The glazed pieces are then fired in the kiln again, after which you can collect your finished work, about 4–6 weeks later.
